Upcoming Programs

The Rock Kendo and Iaido Club is pleased to partner with End Sexual Violence NL to offer two Free martial arts programs to the public. (However donations, small or large, are greatly appreciated so The Rock can continue to provide future programs and seminars.)
These upcoming programs are:
Instructor: Tom Alteen, Iaido Shodan (First
Degree Black Belt) and Aikido Sandan (Third Degree Black Belt)
Who May Attend: All are welcome however children under the age of 13 must be accompanied by a parent or other legal guardian, and those under the age of 19 must have a parent or other legal guardian available at registration.
Prerequistes: No prequisite physical or martial arts training is required.
Registration: Registration will take place at the beginning of each session. It is also recommended that you reserve your spot(s) in advance by emailing Tom or calling him at (709) 689-4488.
Attire: If you do not have a gi (traditional martial arts uniform), a long-sleeve sweat shirt and sweat pants are recommended. For the "Introduction to Iaido," please bring a long scarf or sash to hold the sword.
Street shoes are not permitted in the dojo (practice area), so it is recommended that attendees have sandals or socks to enter the gym.
Once inside, practice is usually performed with bare feet.
Equipment: If you do not have an Iaito (unsharpened replica of a Japanese samurai sword with scabbard) or a Bokken (wooden sword) for the "Introduction to Iaido" program, we will have bokkens to lend. Live Action Role Play (LARP) swords and Kendo Shinai (bamboo swords) may also be used.
No Shinken (sharp or live blades) are permitted!
Certificates: Certificates will be issued to attendees at the completion of each program.
Masking: Masking is recommended but not mandatory.
Introduction to Iaido
This session will provide an introduction to the Seitei Katas.
All the katas will be taught from standing.

Self-Defense
Attendees will learn the fundamentals of breaking holds, evasive manoeuvers, blocks, and strikes.
