The Club 17 Break

(Last Update:  December 22, 2008)

Crosstown Traffic wanted to break into the local night club scene and to play for older audiences.   (See the Western Star article.)

Club 17 was a local hot spot in Corner Brook that was owned and operated by the Kawaja family.  Brian Dicks recalls, "Monty Kawaja came over to Donny's basement [where we were practicing] to check us out.   I remember us playing 'Teacher' [by Jethro Tull] for him.   Guess it was OK because he booked us for a Sunday night.

Back then Club 17 only had mainland acts that played from Monday to Saturday.  Anyway, we blocked and rocked the joint so he booked us later for a week.  We were the first local band to do that."

Don added, "The place had a mystique in those days to me . . . also my first offer from a groupie!  I ran away!!!   Of course I was pretty serious with Sue then."
